This week two hugely exciting announcements were made …
On Monday the nominations were published for the 2019 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards, and I am over the moon THE HOUSE WITH CHICKEN LEGS has been nominated for the Carnegie Medal!
The CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Awards are the UK’s oldest and most prestigious children’s book awards. They recognise outstanding writing (Carnegie Medal) and illustration (Kate Greenway Medal) in books for children and young people, and are unique in that they are judged solely by librarians.
The full list of nominations for the Carnegie Medal can be seen here and the nominations for the Kate Greenway Medal here. Some of my favourite authors, illustrators and books are found on these lists so I am truly honoured to see THE HOUSE WITH CHICKEN LEGS among them. Thank you, librarians!
The longlist will be announced on 18th of February 2019 and the shortlist on 18th March. CILIP engage thousands of children and young people in reading the books on the shortlist via a brilliant shadowing scheme that works with reading groups in schools and public libraries.
The winning books will be announced on the 17th of June. Whatever happens during the next stages I am just thrilled THE HOUSE WITH CHICKEN LEGS has been nominated for such a prestigious award!

The second exciting announcement this week came from the BBC show Blue Peter …
THE HOUSE WITH CHICKEN LEGS has been shortlisted in the Blue Peter Book Awards! Seeing Melissa Castrillón and Elisa Paganelli‘s gorgeous illustrations brought to life in the animation on the show was an incredible feeling that brought tears to my eyes!
The shortlist was chosen by judges Ewan Vinnicombe, Darren Chetty, Louise Pentland and Alex T Smith (thank you, judges!) but the next stage involves selected schools around the country picking two overall winners (one fiction and one factual).
It’s massively exciting to think of all the readers who will travel with THE HOUSE WITH CHICKEN LEGS during the coming months thanks to this shortlisting!
The winners will be announced live on Blue Peter on World Book Day, Thursday 7 March 2019. In the meantime, you can read more about all the longlisted and shortlisted books here.
