Author Visits

I offer presentations and workshops around the theme of ‘Reimagining Fairy Tales’, and love to deliver fun-filled events that inspire reading, writing, and creativity.

In presentations I discuss my inspiration (Slavic fairy tales, especially the character of Baba Yaga), give a short reading from The House with Chicken Legs, provide tips on how to reimagine fairy tales, and host an interactive group story telling activity. There is also time for questions at the end, and I ask for help arranging the opportunity to buy signed books. Presentations are suitable for either small or large groups.

In workshop events, I discuss different ways of reimagining fairy tales, host interactive activities where we reimagine fairy tales as a group, then I help participants work on their own individual fairy tale reimaginings. I can also provide the opportunity for participants to colour in a skull or flower sun catcher to take home. Workshop events are suitable for up to 35 children.

My presentations and workshops can be adapted, but are particularly suitable for KS2 children (ages 7-11).

Pleasant Street Primary School, Liverpool, June 2018

Sophie came to do an assembly with the whole of KS2 – they were buzzing with excitement! During the assembly, Sophie shared her writing process for The House With Chicken Legs and the children then reimagined their own fairytales, with great enthusiasm. Two weeks after the visit, over half the class are now reading her book and writing their own stories based on fairytales. Sophie’s visit has had a long lasting impact on our writing for pleasure.

We were delighted to welcome Sophie to our school and a large audience of P4-7 children. Sophie held the children’s attention skilfully in a lovely understated manner and they hung on her every word. When she read a chapter from the book, you could have heard a pin drop in the large hall. The children were eager to ask questions about being an author and about the book itself and Sophie was encouraging and enlightening in turn. Our children loved Sophie’s visit and really benefited from the opportunity to discuss the craft of writing and ways in which they might find inspiration for their own work. The whole experience was hugely enjoyable and of great educational value to our children.

I thought Sophie was really good and her book is really exciting. She didn’t rush people when they asked questions and she was really encouraging.

Our school visit was fantastic. The children were engaged from start to finish and loved the activities that Sophie planned. They enjoyed finding out about how she became an author and loved hearing about where her ideas for writing came from. The activities were really appealing and the children loved designing their own houses and planning their own stories. The painting activity at the end was brilliant. Feedback from the pupils was brilliant they loved meeting a real life author and the copies of the book we have in school were checked out from the library in record time. I would definitely recommend booking a visit.

Working with Sophie on this incredible event was inspiring. Sophie connected immediately with the audience and had such great questions from the children. Sophie is one of the friendliest and inspiring speakers I have had the pleasure to work with on school events.
