Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of The Girl of Ink and Stars

Twelve-year-old Marinka dreams of a normal life, where her house stays in one place long enough for her to make friends. But her house has chicken legs and moves on without warning. The only people Marinka meets are dead, and they disappear when her grandmother, Baba Yaga, guides them through The Gate. Marinka wants to change her destiny, but her house has other ideas…

You can read the prologue at Usborne’s website here, and the book is available to purchase from WaterstonesFoylesAmazon, or other book stores.

Below is a magical, animated version of the UK cover; illustrated by the brilliant Melissa Castrillón, designed by Katharine Millichope at Usborne, and brought to life by videographer Penelope Mazza.

  1. Yesterday I found this book in Edinburgh book shop. 🙂 Slavic Mythology book in UK book shop? 🙂 Lovely! I love Baba Yaga. Thank you for this book and I’m waiting for the next books. 🙂

  2. I loved this book. I read it in less than a day and I found I could relate to Marinka the whole story especially because I am the same age. I can’t wait for the next book.

  3. Hi! You have any idea when your book will be available in Dutch? I work in a bookshop and a lot of people come and ask for the dutch version. And my ten year old daughter would love this book too 😉

    1. Hello Lies, it is wonderful to hear people are asking for a Dutch version. Rights have sold in many countries, but sadly not in the Netherlands yet. Hopefully they will, and as soon as I have any news I will let you know! x

  4. My just turned 9 year old loved this book. In a shop yesterday she convinced a complete stranger to buy it for her 12 year old granddaughter. I think her enthusiastic summary clinched it. I’ve never heard her so enthralled about a book.
